1
Rinse your mouth with salt water. Fill a glass with warm water and mix 3 tbsp. salt into it. Gargle the salt water within your mouth for 30 seconds. Make sure to swoosh the salt water around all of your teeth, to reduce swelling and pain. Refrain from rinsing your mouth out afterward for longer results. Repeat the salt water rinse as often as necessary as a temporary pain reliever.

2
Practice proper hygiene. Brush your teeth at least 3 times a day. In addition, rinse your mouth following each time you eat. Refrain from harsh mouthwashes and replace rinsing with a salt rinse.

3
Floss your teeth. When gums are swollen, flossing may be a little painful--although if you floss daily, it helps reduce receding gum lines that may promote the swelling.

See a dentist if symptoms of swelling don't subside within a couple days. A full consultation will provide you with the next necessary steps needed for treatment.
