Whenever you apply a Windows XP hotfix or service pack, the operating system automatically runs a backup program and saves your old information. The purpose is to provide a way for you to return to a previous edition if errors occur. These files start to add up and take up space on your hard drive. After several updates without problems, old files can be deleted to clean up hard disk space.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Double-click "My Computer," then double-click the "C:\" drive.

  2. Step 2

Double-click the "Windows" directory. In this folder there is a file named $NTServicePackUninstall. This file is a backup of old service pack files and can be deleted.

  3. Step 3

Now delete the files from your hard drive. Double-click the "SoftwareDistribution" folder.

  4. Step 4

Double-click the "Download" directory. Within this folder is a long list of old service packs downloaded during installation. Delete these files.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not delete the C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles directory. These files are used by the Windows File Protection application.
