AT&T, which is the wireless carrier for Apple's iPhone, will provide a generic outgoing message for when the phone is not answered. But many iPhone owners want to leave their own personalized outgoing message. Leaving a personalized outgoing message reassures callers that they have reached the right number. Setting a personalized outgoing message is something that can be done fairly simply with just a few steps.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Select the "Phone" icon on the bottom of the iPhone screen. This icon is located on the same row as the "Mail," "Safari" and "iPod" icons. The phone screen will open after you press the "Phone" icon.

  2. Step 2

Find the "Voicemail" button on the bottom row of the next screen. The "Voicemail" button should be the button on the far right at the bottom of the screen. Press this button.

  3. Step 3

Tap the word "Greeting," which is located on the top left-hand side of the "Voicemail" screen. The next screen that opens will have two options. The first option says "Default." The second option says "Custom." Select the "Custom" button.

  4. Step 4

Press the "Record" button when you are ready to record the greeting. Say the message, and press the "Stop" button.

  5. Step 5

Review the greeting by tapping on the "Play" button. If you don't like the message you have recorded, you can create a new outgoing message by selecting "Record" again.

  6. Step 6

Tap the "Save" button. The outgoing message has now been created and is operational.

Tips & Warnings
  • There are programs that allow users to upload audio files to be used as their outgoing messages.
  • The programs that allow users to upload audio files to use on the outgoing messages are not Apple-sanctioned. This means that if one of these programs damages the iPhone, the phone is no longer under warranty, because an improper program was installed.
