How to Use Hand Wraps

The most important tool a boxer has are his hands, and they must be appropriately protected. Hand wraps are your hands' first layer of defense. Not using them properly can lead to permanent damage.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1
    Hook the loop on your thumb.
     
    Hook the loop on your thumb.

    Face the palm of your hand toward your chest. Hook the hand wrap's thumb loop over your thumb.

  2. Step 2
    Wrap around your wrist.
     
    Wrap around your wrist.

    Tightly wrap around your wrist twice, but don't cut off your circulation.

  3. Step 3
    Wrap around your thumb.
     
    Wrap around your thumb.

    Wrap over the knuckle of your thumb, then back over the top of your wrist twice.

  4. Step 4
    Wrap around your knuckles.
     
    Wrap around your knuckles.

    Spread your fingers apart and bring the wrap over the top of your hand, then across your pinkie knuckle. Bring the wrap under the palm of your hand and back over the top of your knuckles twice.

  5. Step 5
    Wrap between your fingers.
     
    Wrap between your fingers.

    Wrap in between your middle finger, ring finger, under your hand and back over the top.

  6. Step 6
    Continue wrapping between your fingers.
     
    Continue wrapping between your fingers.

    Wrap between your ring finger and pinkie, under your hand and back over the top.

  7. Step 7
    Finish wrapping between your fingers.
     
    Finish wrapping between your fingers.

    Wrap in between your middle and index fingers.

  8. Step 8
    Wrap around your knuckles and wrist.
     
    Wrap around your knuckles and wrist.

    Bring the wrap back around your wrist, then your knuckles.

  9. Step 9
    A completely wrapped hand.
     
    A completely wrapped hand.

    Keep wrapping around your wrist until you can Velcro the wrap to your wrist.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make a fist whenever possible as you wrap your hand.
  • Do not wrap your hand too tight. If you feel numbness or tingling, unwrap your hand. Never hit a punching bag without hand wraps and gloves.
