How to Clean House Bricks

A brick house requires very little maintenance. However, the brick will occasionally get dirty due to rain, mildew or soot from a chimney. Using a pressure washer to clean the bricks is the easiest method, but it is not always feasible. Using soap and a stiff brush can accomplish the task just as well. Does this Spark an idea?

      Repair loose mortar. Scrape away and replace any mortar that is broken or loose. This will prevent water from getting trapped behind the bricks. Allow to dry for 24 hours before washing.

      Remove loose dirt. With a stiff bristle brush, remove the loose dirt and grime from the bricks.

      Apply a cleaning solution. In a large bucket, mix dish washing liquid and water. Apply the solution to the brick by using a stiff bristle brush.

      Work in sections by scrubbing in a circular motion, removing the dirt.

      Rinse. Using a hose with a spray nozzle, thoroughly rinse the soap from the wall.

Tips & Warnings

  • Never use muriatic acid to clean the bricks. The solution has the potential to permanently discolor the brick.
