The Harmony 890 is a universal remote control available through Logitech. It can control multiple electronic devices within a household, including a television, stereo, DVD player and video game console. Since you're going to pay a hefty price tag for the Harmony 890, you will want to know some basics on how to use it. You can purchase it directly from the Logitech website or find the remote at retailers like Ritz Camera and Radio Shack.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Install the software on your computer by loading the CD packaged with the remote. You must have Windows 2000 or higher installed.

  2. Step 2

Connect the Harmony 890 remote control to your computer via the USB cable. Select "Setup" from the main menu to start adding devices to the remote.

  3. Step 3

Enter the model numbers of the different electronic devices you wish to control with your Harmony 890 remote. For each device that you add, enter a list of activities you want to perform with the remote. For example, if you are adding a stereo to the remote, choose functions, like "Listen to CD" and "Listen to Radio." When you are finished, select "Update Remote."

  4. Step 4

The Harmony 890 remote can be used without having to point the device at a specific item. It has a range of 100 feet. Select the "Display" key on the remote to see icons of all the available activities you have included. Use the corresponding button next to that activity to operate the electronic device.

  5. Step 5

Charge the remote with the included battery pack base. Instead of replacing batteries, you can charge it in the included base. The remote has a "Glow" button that illuminates the dials. This should be disabled during charging. Before charging you can turn off all activities at once by simply pressing "Off."
