How to Install a 56K Modem

Though largely deprecated today with the widespread availability of broadband Internet access, 56K modems still have a functionality within the modern computing world. Most notably, 56K modems are useful for FAX machines as fax over Internet protocols is usually only viable if both client and host are using a specific software package. Further, devices such as credit card and ATM machines use dial-up modems for communications to establish credit and cash availability for the card being used. Installing a 56K modem is a simple task easily accomplished in just a few minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect your computer from any electrical sources.

    • 2

Remove the computer's side access panel. This may require removing two thumbscrews on the rear face of the computer's case.

    • 3

Locate a free motherboard interface slot matching that of your 56K modem. Though 56K modems are mostly designed for PCI slots, there are models available in PCIe, PCIX and ISA.

    • 4

Insert your 56K modem into the slot with the metal plate of the modem facing the back of the computer's case. This allows for external connectors to be exposed to the outside of the case.

    • 5

Close the computer's case and reestablish any electric power severed previously.

    • 6

Boot into your operating system and install any driver software that came with the 56K modem.

Tips & Warnings

  • It is well advised to visit the manufacturer's website as there might be newer drivers available.

  • Never perform computer maintenance while the computer is electrified, as this may result in device damage and personal injury.
