How to Report Spousal Abuse

Spousal abuse is a specific form of domestic violence that takes place between married partners. While many people believe that spousal abuse is usually violence directed toward a woman from her husband, the truth is that it can go the other way, as well.

Instructions

  1. Realize that enough is enough

    • 1

Get fed up. The first step in reporting spousal abuse is deciding to. You have to realize that enough is enough, and that you are no longer content with the life you live. It is not always an easy thing to do, but realizing that your relationship is abusive is the only way you can proceed with the rest of the process.

    • 2

Call the police. If you cannot call the police when an incident has occurred, call them as soon after as you possibly can. Time is of the essence.

    • 3

Leave. You cannot stop spousal abuse by remaining in your home. Iron out the legal details later, and get to a space where you can be safe.

    • 4

Have a plan. When you leave, you may only be able to get away with a few key belongings, so choose wisely. Can you stay with a friend? Do you have savings to support yourself? Are you working and able to provide for yourself? Leaving is important--but so is having a plan.

    • 5

Document everything. Document issues of abuse, when they occur, what happens, and what was said. If your spouse contacts you after you file the report, take note of that as well.

    • 6

Press charges. This will not always be easy, but there are severe legalities in place for those who abuse their spouses or partners, and they are separate from other issues of assault. If you don't press charges they will never see the repercussions of their actions.
The police can help you to get a no-contact order or restraining order in place so that there will be negative consequences in the event that your spouse does contact you.

Tips & Warnings

  • Seek support of those who know about your situation. Stick to your guns once you decide to report the abuse.

  • Don't go back after reporting abuse. Don't wait too long--these situations tend to get worse.
