Earning a real estate broker's license in Texas requires taking college level courses, passing a background check and successfully completing a state- administered examination. All real estate brokers must also already have a real estate sales agent license and have completed the required number of sales before sitting for the real estate broker's examination.

    How to Become a Real Estate Broker in Texas

  1. Step 1

    Register for real estate broker classes at an accredited college or education service center. Complete 210 hours of education. Required courses include 30 hours of law of agency, 30 hours of real estate of principles, 30 hours of principles and practices II, 30 hours of contract law, 30 hours of core real estate courses and 60 hours of related courses on the approved list by the Texas Real Estate Commission.

  2. Step 2

    Submit college transcripts and course completion certificates to the Texas Real Estate Commission. Processing of the documents takes about two weeks.

  3. Step 3

    File a real estate broker application with the Texas Real Estate Commission. Forms are available on the department's website (see Resources), and can be filed online. Processing takes about 10 days.

  4. Step 4

    Complete the Texas Real Estate Broker Candidate Information Packet, and return to the department office. After the packet is processed, a candidate can be seated for the state administered examination.

  5. Step 5

    Take the real estate broker examination, which is composed of two sections. Candidates must pass the state and national portions of the test or retake the failed portion before receiving a broker's license.

  • Confer with a real estate broker, or real estate course instruction before selecting related course classes. Guidance from professionals will aid in preparation for both the licensure test and a successful career.
  • A background check is required to obtain a real estate broker's license. Any felony charge and some types of misdemeanor charges could prevent a candidate from gaining approval to sit for the real estate broker's examination.
