Making a T-shirt tote bag out of duct tape is a very inexpensive project. There are no tools required, and the only supply you'll need is the duct tape. It is a fun and simple project that would be ideal to do with a youth group. You can use different colored duct tape to personalize the bag or create a pattern on the sides of the tote. It is time consuming, particularly if you have never made anything from duct tape before. Once you are comfortable making duct tape sheets, there are a wide variety of duct tape projects you can tackle.

How to Make a Duct Tape T-Shirt Tote Bag

  1. Step 1

Tear off pieces of duct tape approximately 12 inches long. You are going to use the pieces of duct tape to create a duct tape sheet.

  2. Step 2

Lay the first strip of duct tape horizontally and sticky side up on a flat work surface. Lay the second strip of duct tape horizontally and sticky side down over the bottom half of the first strip. Fold the top half of the first strip down over the middle so the bottom half of the two strips is the only exposed sticky part.

  3. Step 3

Flip the two strips of duct tape over so the bottom half of the two strips now is the only exposed sticky part and is sticky side up. Lay a third strip of duct tape, sticky side down, over the bottom half of the second strip.

  4. Step 4

Continue flipping the strips of duct tape over and adding new strips until you have a sheet of duct tape that is approximately 36 inches long.

  5. Step 5

Fold the sheet of duct tape in half, creating a rectangle measuring 12 inches wide by 18 inches high.

  6. Step 6

Apply duct tape to the 18-inch sides of the folded sheet, creating a large duct tape pocket.

  7. Step 7

Create two handles by repeating steps one and two, but after you are done folding down the top of the first strip, you'll fold up the bottom of the second strip. You should be left with two strips of duct tape with no exposed sticky parts.

  8. Step 8

Take the first strip and lay the ends of the strips flat on the outside of one side of the bag. Cover the ends with another strip of duct tape to hold the strap to the bag. Repeat this step with the second strip on the other side of the bag.

Tips & Warnings
  • You don't have to stick with traditional gray duct tape for this project; you can choose from many different colors.
  • Make sure your work area is clean since a lot of dust or dirt can affect the stickiness of the duct tape.
