Hypnosis is a method of putting a person in a trance like or dream-like state wherein he or she is open to suggestion. Although people cannot be hypnotized to reveal secrets or do something against their will, it can be used to create a focused state of concentration. The brain is in the "alpha" stage and a rich sensory experience can be created to improve everyday life. People have used hypnosis to manage pain, lose weight, become better public speakers and more. Hypnosis can also be used effectively to help someone quit smoking. Here is how to hypnotize a person to quit smoking.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Relaxed environment
  1. Step 1

Set a quiet, comfortable environment for the hypnosis session. The person to be hypnotized should be laying down or in a very comfortable chair. He or she should remove eyeglasses and any tight clothing.

  2. Step 2

Select a spot on the ceiling and tell the person to stare at it for a few minutes. As he or she stares at the spot tell the subject that his or her eyes are getting heavier and heavier, and that soon he or she will be unable to resist the urge to close them. Then tell them to close the eyes.

  3. Step 3

Speak in a calm voice and tell the person to relax his or her body. Start at the feet and work up the body, part by part, encouraging the person to relax each section.

  4. Step 4

Ask the person to imagine that he or she is at the top of a flight of steps and walking down. With each step down, he or she becomes more relaxed.

  5. Step 5

Tell the person to visualize a smoke-free life. Encourage the subject to vividly see himself or herself enjoying different environments without a cigarette.

  6. Step 6

Plant the suggestion in the subject's head that the next time he or she thinks of reaching for a cigarette, he or she will instead reach for a piece of gum or a celery stick. Repeat the suggestion several times.

  7. Step 7

Gently tell the subject that in a few moments, he or she will awaken from the relaxed state feeling refreshed. Awaken the subject.

  8. Step 8

Repeat the hypnosis sessions two times a week to reinforce the goal of not smoking, until it is firmly ingrained.
