Despite the best of intentions, clutter seems to accumulate in closets over time. It is difficult to stay organized when closets are messy and untidy. There comes a point in time when a closet must be emptied, organized, and the items replaced in systematic order. Once this is accomplished, a closet will be a pleasure to open and browse through. Learn how to clean out a closet to restore order to your belongings.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Two large boxes One large garbage bag Storage bins (with lids) Vacuum cleaner (with attachments) Label maker Marker
  1. Step 1

Empty the closet. Start from the top and work your way down. Place items from the shelves in one area of the room. Place hanging items in another area of the room. Place items from the floor area in another area of the room.

  2. Step 2

Use the vacuum to clean out the closet from top to bottom. Clean every shelf and corner completely.

  3. Step 3

Place the two large boxes and the garbage bag in a central work area. Label one box "Give Away." Label the other box "Move." Use the garbage bag for trash.

  4. Step 4

Begin to work through all of the items from the closet shelves. Pick up each item and evaluate its usefulness and how much you need or want it. Place items to give away in the "Give Away" box. Place items that belong in other areas of the house in the "Move" box. Throw any trash items into the garbage bag. Place items that belong on the closet shelves neatly back in the closet.

  5. Step 5

Move on to the hanging items. Go through each article of clothing and place the items either in the "Give Away" box, the "Move" box, the garbage bag, or hang them back up in the closet. If you have not worn an article of clothing for over a year, place it in the "Give Away" box.

  6. Step 6

Sort the items from the closet floor. Place items to give away in the "Give Away" box. Place items that can be stored elsewhere in the house in the "Move" box. Throw trash into the garbage bag. Sort the items that remain and place them into the storage bins. Label the bins with the marker or label maker and place the storage bins on the floor of the closet.

  7. Step 7

Dispose of the garbage bag. Take the "Give Away" to a charity as soon as possible. Distribute the items in the "Move" box to the other locations in the house.

Tips & Warnings
