Windows Service Pack 2 XP (SP2) is a service pack upgrade meant for Microsoft Windows XP. Service packs are how XP updates are distributed. With service packs, you keep your system updated and protected. This service pack fixes a number of problems with the original XP release.

Here's how to install Service Pack 2 XP

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Go to the Microsoft website (www.microsoft.com) and download Service Pack 2 or purchase the disk to be sent to you in the mail. If you choose to download the file, save it to your computer. This is a large file and can take a couple hours to download.

  2. Step 2

    If you download Service Pack 2 XP, go to where you saved it on your computer. If you purchased the disk, insert the disk into the drive on your computer and the installation will start automatically.

  3. Step 3

    Follow the instructions on the screen. When it's finished, your computer will restart automatically.

  4. Step 4

    Click "Start" then "Control Panel" then "System". Click the "General" tab to make sure that you properly installed Service Pack 2 XP.

  5. Step 5

    In order to get future updates, turn on the "Automatic Updates" feature by going to the Control Panel (click Start - then click Control Panel). Then click Automatic Updates and select Automatic.

Tips & Warnings
  • Service Pack 2 XP is not the latest version of service packs offered through Microsoft. There is service pack 3 (SP3) which can be accessed at the Microsoft website as well.
