I was astonished to learn that it was common that for some people that updated their laptops with an update from Microsoft Windows to have their laptops freeze and thus be unable to get past the "Welcome" screen. This happened to a laptop of mine, and I didn't have the Windows Vista disc that came with the computer. I was going to have to spend a lot of money to reformat it until I found a solution to the problem -- for free.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • ACER brand laptop that was frozen during a Windows Vista Update
  1. Step 1

Turn on the laptop and when the white "ACER" screen comes on, hit ALT+F10. Do not allow Windows to load. You should read "Starting Acer eRecovery".

  2. Step 2

The next screen will give you 4 options:
    1. Restore System to Factory Default
    2. Restore system from user's backup
    3. Recover system from CD/DVD
    4. Reinstall applications/drivers

Without the backup disc, press option 1.

  3. Step 3

Follow the directions on the screen and be aware, restoring your system back to factory defaults will cause you to lose everything you have saved onto the hard drive.

  4. Step 4

If you have used the eRecovery process before (which I had not until this point) you may be asked to put in your password, in which case do so, because then you may not have to restore it back to default, but to the point where you last made a recovery image.

Tips & Warnings
  • There are helpful websites you can visit to help further with the process as I am not a technical person, however I did manage to use this feature and fully restore my laptop to a usable condition.
  • USE THIS OPTION ONLY IF YOU DO NOT HAVE THE DISCS TO RESTORE YOUR COMPUTER OR ANY BACKUP DISCS
