Things You'll Need:
- 1 cup grain alcohol
- carrier oil
- 2 1/2 tsp essential oils
- spray bottle
-
Step 1
Fill a spray bottle with one cup of grain alcohol (190 proof), which is available in liquor stores. Do not use rubbing alcohol because it will dry your skin out. If you prefer a moisturizing mosquito repellant, use a carrier oil such as almond oil, safflower oil or coconut oil; or you can use a combination of a carrier oil and grain alcohol.
-
Step 2
Add 2 ½ teaspoons of essential oils to the spray bottle. You can use a combination of any of the following essential oils: cedarwood, citronella, basil, juniper, rosemary, rose geranium, lemon, myrrh, palmarosa, eucalyptus, pine, thyme, sage, fennel, and lavender. Avoid pennyroyal, which can be hazardous to pregnant women.
-
Step 3
Experiment with different blends of essential oils to find a natural mosquito repellant that is most effective on the insects in your area, works well with your skin chemistry, does not irritate your skin, and is aromatically pleasing to you.
-
Step 4
Shake the alcohol, carrier oil, and essential oils vigorously until they are well blended, and apply it to your skin to repel mosquitoes and insects. Test your natural mosquito repellant on a small portion of your skin to make sure it does not irritate your skin.
-
Step 5
Reapply every few hours for optimum mosquito repellant effectiveness. Enjoy your time outside now that you have an effective natural mosquito repellant.
