You need to perform an in home inventory to record the value of your obsessions in case you ever need to make an insurance claim. The process may be time consuming but it is well worth it. Once the process is completed, all you need to do is to update the inventory record regularly. Store your completed inventory report in a home safe that is available at a very low cost at major department stores.

  2. Step 2

Perform an in home inventory and make a list, take digital photos for your records. You may also choose to video record your household belongings. The Insurance Information Institute (III) offer free software that can help. Go to www.iii.org for the free software. The software allows you to keep track of belonging in every room. The software records your purchases, prices of your purchases, dates of our purchases and identifies other important insurance information.

  3. Step 3

To get started, go to room to room an list with photos of your household inventory. Write down every item and approximate purchase date. If you do not know the exact date, make an educated guess. If the item was a gift go online and find a comparable item to get a price. Include a miscellaneous list of items that can not be categorized. When listing electronics, list the brand and the model number and any other identifying data. Include inventory from the garage and any other outdoor buildings.

  4. Step 4

Supplement your room to room list with photos. You can upload the photos from your camera to your computer for a secure and safe storage environment. Save the information on USB flash drives just in case the computer is harmed or stolen. Taking photos are better than video taping when listing your household inventory because it is difficult to update videos. Update the household inventory list frequently.
