Make sure that the cage was designed for parakeets because they are very small birds that can squeeze out of most bird cages.
Get a cage with plenty of flying space for your birds. Try to get the biggest bird cage that you can afford for your parakeets so that they have more room to stretch their wings. They will be much happier with a larger cage. -
Step 2
Add newspaper to the bottom of your parakeet cage.
Replace this newspaper every week. -
Step 3
Add the food dishes into your parakeet cage and fill them with a nutritious parakeet food. Research which type of parakeet bird seed is best for your birds.
Check the parakeet food dish every day and always keep the dish full. Every week the food dish should be thoroughly cleaned by scrubbing it while using hot water and a cloth to ensure it's clean.
It's best to add two food dishes into your bird cage to give your parakeets more options. -
Step 4
Add the water dish to the parakeet cage and fill it with "safe drinking water".
Fill the water dishes every day. Parakeets must never run out of water!
Completely clean out the water dishes using hot water and a cloth. Do this every other day to make sure that mold doesn't grow inside of the parakeets water dishes.
It's best to have two water dishes in your parakeet cage to make sure that they never run out of water. -
Step 5
Add bird toys into your parakeet cage to keep them busy and happy.
-
Step 6
Add perches and sticks into the cage for your parakeets to sit on. Parakeets like to perch for most of the day.
-
Step 7
Add cuttlebones into the parakeet cage. A parakeet cage should always have cuttle bones in the cage at all times.
-
Step 8
Make sure that you place the bird cage in a safe place inside of your house. The area should be quiet and shielded from any temperature extremes and drafts.
Parakeets don't like to be cold or hot. Keep them somewhere that remains room temperature so that they will be comfortable. -
Step 9
Give your pet parakeets some millet as a treat every three days.
Most pet stores sell bird treats made specifically for parakeets. Don't give your parakeets too many treats. Try to wait at least every 3 days between giving your birds treats. -
Step 10
Clean out any newspaper in the bottom of your parakeets bird cage every week.
Thoroughly clean off all of the bird cage accessories once a month. (This includes : Perches, Toys, etc.)
Thoroughly clean and scrub off the entire bird cage twice a year (every 6 months.)
You may have to maintenance your bird cage more or less often, if necessary.) -
Step 11
Research parakeets to get to know more about them.
If anything ever happens to your birds such as one of them getting sick, take the bird to the vet immediately.
