For a beginner interested in yoga, joining a class or starting to practice yoga can be daunting. However, knowing a little bit ahead of time can give you confidence as you begin a journey of health.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • yoga mat
  • bottle of water
  • clothes
  1. Step 1

    Find a class or resource
Search the internet or ask around to find something to get you started. I began by watching a show that came on, however I recommend finding a beginner yoga class. The instructor can recommend modifications for injuries and can provide guidance. Often classes with an emphasis on stress relief or relaxation are good for beginners, but yoga is about You not about matching the people around you. If you find yourself comparing yourself to other than you are not "staying on your mat".

  2. Step 2
A yoga kit from target includes mat, brick, straps and DVD.

    Buy equipment
I consider the most important thing to invest in is a yoga mat. Some of the exercise mats may provide more cushion but they could sabotage your balance. You can find mats in a variety of places and they can range from $10 - $40. I've even found yoga mats in Barnes and Noble! Some people use two thin yoga mats ontop of each other. Experiment and see what is best for you ( your floor surface may be a factor as well). Most classes will assume that you already own a yoga mat.

Other equipment include foam bricks ( used for support or spacing) and ropes for stretching. Although these can be nice and useful for modifying or making some aspect more comfortable, they are not a must have.

  3. Step 3

    Dress out
Yoga is different from other sports or activities because of the wide variety of movements involved. On the floor....reaching up....sitting...twisting.. etc.. Comfort and flexibility are the keys. You want something slightly clingy so that it will stick to your form even as you bend or reach down, however you don't want to be constricted. You can buy clothes designed for yoga or make your own outfits using existing pieces.

  4. Step 4

    Find the right attitude
Be proud of yourself for trying something new and expect challenges. However, you can also expect improvement. Trying something like yoga is not only a positive step towards a healthy body it can also be healthy for your mind. Consider this an investment and don't worry about immediately being perfect. Yoga will become more rewarding as you build strength and flexibility, however everyone is different and even our bones mean that some poses may be difficult.

When I first began taking yoga classes I was frustrated by my inflexibility and lack of strength. Six months later, downward dog is still difficult however much more comfortable. I'm still not as flexible as some people however I can reach about 6 inches farther than I could before. Additionally I'm able to relax more quickly at bed time and suffer from less muscle cramps or stiffness. I'm glad I didn't give up!

Tips & Warnings
  • bring a friend for moral support
  • drink water before and after
  • watch for small improvement to keep you motivated
  • stay on your mat! ( concentrate on yourself)
  • Be brave! Trying new things is not always easy.
  • let your yoga instructor know about physical concerns or injuries
  • some days your will have better balance, coordination and strength than others, just do your best and know that each time will be different
