How to Ease The Pain of Mastitis

Mastitis is a terribly painful infection of the breast. This happens most often when a women is breastfeeding. The symptoms are similar to the flu. If you suspect you have mastitis call your doctor and read on about how to ease the pain.

Things You'll Need:

  • hot pads
  • cold pads
  1. Step 1

    The first and most important thing to do when you have mastitis is to continue to feed your baby. The baby will not catch it. But the infected milk will sit in your breast unless you breast feed or pump.

  2. Step 2

    Use hot compresses over the infected area. This will ease the pain and help the milk become thinner and drain out. Let the compress sit on your breast for 15 minutes.

  3. Step 3

    You probably have aces all over your body. Take a hot shower to relieve some of the pain and try to drain the breast by hand while you are in the shower.

  4. Step 4

    Get lots of sleep. You need your sleep. Sounds hard with a new baby but it is important that you give your baby to someone else and only be bothered to feed the baby. Then sleep the rest of the time.

  5. Step 5

    Use a cool compress to relieve swelling.

  6. Step 6

    Lastly if you are pumping wash your hands and the breast pump before and after each pumping session. Sanitize your breast pump once a weak.
