Things You'll Need:
- Liquid Vitamin E (can be found at any grocery store or pharmacy)
- Palmer's Cocoa Butter with Vitamin E
- Mederma with SPF 30
- PATIENCE!
-
Step 1
If you currently have an open wound, this first step can help you to minimize the chance of scarring. Make sure that you keep the wound clean, with some water and mild soap. Keep it protected and moistened with Neosporin and a band-aid if the wound is in a place where the Neosporin can rub off. Apply the Neosporin as often as necessary.
-
Step 2
This step is crucial! Let the wound heal completely before beginning treatment for scarring. If you don't, you may risk irritating the skin further and will actually end up worsening the scarring.
-
Step 3
Once the wound is completely healed, begin to apply Mederma. You should do this 3 times per day for 8 weeks for new scars and 3 times per day for 3 to 6 months for existing scars. When you first put the Mederma on, it may make the scar look red, but don't worry! It will take a few weeks to see results from Mederma, depending on the size and age of the scar, but STICK WITH IT! You will soon see the scar lighten in color and begin to smooth over.
-
Step 4
At night, apply some vitamin E with a Q-tip to the scar. Don't be afraid to rub the vitamin E into the skin, even though it will sink in on its own. Let it sink in a bit and start to dry. Vitamin E is great for your scar because it promotes skin growth, and keeps the scar hydrated and soft.
-
Step 5
Once the vitamin E has started to dry, apply some Palmer's Cocoa Butter with vitamin E. Although you have already applied vitamin E to the skin, a little more in the cocoa butter can't hurt. You don't have to rub the butter in all the way. If you leave a little on the skin's surface, over the course of the night, the excess will soak into the skin and this will maximize benefits. Cocoa butter is designed to soften and blend scars into skin so think of all the benefits that your skin is receiving overnight!
-
Step 6
This is also a crucial step: KEEP SUNSCREEN ON THE SCAR AT ALL TIMES! Sun will only do more damage to the skin and will severely stunt the body's ability to heal and the product's ability to minimize the scar. You can buy Mederma with SPF 30 but if you don't want to spend a few extra bucks, you can just apply regular sunscreen to the scar over the Mederma.
-
Step 7
Continue this regimen until the scar looks like you want it to. It can't hurt to continue moisturizing and protecting the skin with SPF even after the scar has diminished.
