Break The Ice and Get The Conversation Flowing

Making conversation in a room full of strangers is not always the most appealing of thoughts. Eventually someone has to break the ice and get the conversation flowing.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Ignore or embrace the concept that no one knows anything about you. You can use this as a positive or a negative to begin small talk.

  2. Step 2

Approach with humor. It is likely that people are bored or even nervous in this awkward situation. They will be more prone to laugh at conversation even if the comments are only mildly funny.

  3. Step 3

Pick out a person that you suspect you have something in common with and start up a conversation. You can select this individual by watching body language or observing style and personal appearances.

  4. Step 4

If you can not think of anything to say then talk about the awkward silence, or the weather. Keep in mind that their is a lot to say about the current economy. General topics are always good suggestions for small talk.

  5. Step 5

Above all remember to smile at others, this may make you more approachable to strangers and help get the conversation flowing.

Tips & Warnings
  • The art of conversation may come easier than you think.
