Summer is a wonderful time to get together with family and friends for outdoor entertainments. But, it is important to remember that a porch or deck can have a number of dangers for young children. These are easy to overlook, particularly if there are no young children in the home. Here are some tips to help make your outside spaces safe for little ones.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Mild soap, sponge, child proof protectors for electrical outlets, table cloth(possibly),rug(possibly)
  1. Step 1

    Child proof all electrical outlets.

  2. Step 2

Wash all surfaces, including outdoor rugs and cushions with mild soapy water.

  3. Step 3

Place objects such as bowls, vases, and candles out of the reach of children. In some cases it may be necessary to remove potentially toxic items such as citronella candles and plants,

  4. Step 4

Sand down any rough spots on floor or railing surfaces. If this is not possible then place rugs over any rough areas to avoid splinters.

  5. Step 5

Make certain all gates and door latches are in working order and latched when little ones arrive. Also, make sure all rails are secure.

  6. Step 6

Remove all cooking and/or heating units from the area until the young ones are gone.

  7. Step 7

Keep all coolers and beverages out of reach.

  8. Step 8

Check and make certain there are no toxic hazards such as peeling paint or insect repellent within the child's reach.

  9. Step 9

Cover any metal or glass tables with a cloth to help blunt the edges, Consider moving any low tables until after the young ones have left.

  10. Step 10

Check screens to make sure there are no loose wires to poke children.

Tips & Warnings
  • Consider borrowing child seats for the occasion in case the parents do not bring along anything.
  • Use paper and plastic whenever possible to avoid breakage during the entertainment.
  • Keep plenty of towels on hand in case of spills.
  • Update your first aid kit before any outdoor party so you are prepared for insect bites and minor falls.
  • Keep checking latches throughout the day to make sure gates and doors stay locked.
  • Avoid using any toxic cleaners or insect repellent before children arrive.
