Things You'll Need:
- Standard garage door kit
- Measuring tape
- Electric drill
- Screw driver
- Metal screws
- Wood
- Hammer
- Nails
- Piece of paper
- Pencil
-
Step 1
Use your measuring tape to calculate the size of your door opening. Make sure you write down the size accurately as you will need these measurements to buy your overhead door kit.
When you go to the hardware store you will find that the overhead door comes in a number of sizes. Most probably the store will have a kit that fits your doors size. However, sometimes the size you need is not available, what you can do is just increase the size of your door opening to suit your requirement.
Once you finalize on your door opening size, buy the overhead door kit. -
Step 2
Now gather all your tools, along with the overhead door kit and you are ready to begin. Take the first panel that needs to be installed and attach the weather stripping to the bottom of that panel.
Take the panel and fit it into the doorway. Once you’ve fitted it well, then use nails to fix it to the jamb at an angle. It is important that you don’t hammer the nails all the way in. Leave them fractionally sticking out. -
Step 3
Now take the hinges and affix them to the top edges of the door.
-
Step 4
Join the door tracks and use the directions in your overhead door kit guide to fix them.
-
Step 5
Brackets and rollers are two of the most important things that will make your overhead door go up and down. Use these two tools along with any other tool mentioned in your overhead door kit guide and affix them to the tracks, wall and any other place mentioned in the guide.
-
Step 6
Now place the track on the bracket and follow the directions mentioned in your overhead door kit guide to fix them on both sides of your door.
You may need some assistance in this step as you have to affix the rollers and any other tool mentioned in the guide. Install them to the second segment and then lift into place with some assistance. Once you’ve successfully lifted it into place join the first and second segment to the hinges. -
Step 7
Continue with the same step for segments three and four.
-
Step 8
Fix the top track and other accessories mentioned in your overhead door kit guide. Check to see if the overhead door is freely moving up and down.
