How to Grout Ceramic Floor Tile

Grouting is filling the space between tiles that you have already placed. It can be difficult at first but with practice, it will become easier to create a smoothly filled joint in a short amount of time. Before you grout, make sure that you have allowed at least 24-48 hours since the application of the tile adhesive. Remove any spacers and clean any spilled-over adhesive within the joints. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Mix the grout according to the instructions. Pour the grout onto the tiled surface. Using the grout float at about a 45 degree angle, scrape it across the surface. Do this diagonally along the face of the tile, as this will help fill the joints. Note: Do not fill the spaces between the tile and the wall or between the tile and another material. This will be your expansion joint, and it is necessary for any settling that may occur.

    • 2

After a few minutes, clean the surface of the tile and any excess grout. Use a damp sponge and be careful not to wipe out the grout from any of the joints.

    • 3

If you choose, you can use a jointing tool to shape the grout. Press lightly into the grout to create a smooth and uniform joint. This will give the grout a different aesthetic look.

    • 4

The tile will need to be cleaned again with the damp sponge. After cleaning, wait until a dull haze appears on the surface of the tile. Once this happens, polish the tiles using a clean, damp cloth. Buff the tiles shortly after with a dry cloth.

    • 5

Let the grout dry for the recommended amount of time before sealing. For most ceramic tiles, only the grout joints will need to be sealed. Using a small paintbrush or a sealer applicator, apply the sealant to the grout.

    • 6

Let the tile grout dry for at least another 24 hours. You can then go back with the silicone caulk and fill the joints along the edges of the wall.

Tips & Warnings

  • Work within a small area to allow yourself time to complete each section before the grout hardens. To avoid discoloration of the grout, finish the work in the same day.
