How to Install Windows XP Skins

Windows XP can be customized with skins and themes that alter the appearance of the desktop, taskbar, menus and certain Microsoft applications. Microsoft uses the term "skin" to refer to software that modifies the appearance of an application, and "theme" to refer to software that modifies the appearance of Windows XP as a whole. Both can be downloaded from the Microsoft Web site and installed in seconds.

Instructions

    • 1

Open your default Web browser and navigate to the Windows XP Desktop Enhancements page on the Microsoft Web site.

    • 2

Browse the selection of software listed under the Themes and Skins heading. If any of the titles and explanations sound like something you might like to try on your computer, click the link to see sample graphics and to learn more.

    • 3

Click the download link for the installation file of any skin or theme you want to download and install. This link will be located on the right side of each skin or theme page.

    • 4

Approve the download when prompted, then wait as the installation file finishes downloading.

    • 5

Double-click the installation file to launch the Install Wizard. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the installation process. Depending on the skin or theme you download, you may be prompted to restart your system before the changes will take effect.
