Filing your unemployment taxes online can save paperwork processing time, missed deadlines, as well as postage fees once your Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS) account is set up. Currently, businesses and individuals can electronically file their federal employment taxes, including the Federal Unemployment Tax (FUTA), using the federal government's secure system, EFTPS. Here's how to file unemployment taxes online.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Internet browser minimum requirements: Internet Explorer 6.x or Firefox 1.x
  • Checking/savings account number
  • Your bank routing and transit number
  • User identification
  • Taxpayer Identification Number (businesses)
  • Social Security number (individuals)
  1. Step 1

Complete the enrollment form for new taxpayers on the EFTPS government website to pay your FUTA taxes online. If you do not have an account, a link is provided. You will need your bank account number and routing and transit number. You will also need to choose a user identification. A PIN (personal identification number) will be mailed to you within 15 days so you can access your account online. If you already have an account, proceed to the next step.

  2. Step 2

Sign into your EFTPS account at least one day prior to the due date of your unemployment taxes, FUTA, before 8 PM. The first time you sign in with the PIN, you will need to confirm your Internet password.

  3. Step 3

Enter your FUTA tax payment amount, double-checking figures for accuracy.

  4. Step 4

Click on the icon that says "Make a Payment."

  5. Step 5

Print out your receipt for your records and proof of payment.

  6. Step 6

Check your bank account to confirm that the debit to your account has taken place. You may need to wait until the next business day for your bank account to update.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can call in your tax payments at 1-800-555-3453 using the EFTPS Voice Response System if your payment if due and the online system is unavailable. Using EFTPS allows taxpayers to correct errors. The system is available seven days a week, 24 hours a day.
  • Tax payments are due on time even if the EFTPS is unavailable or offline. These instructions are for Federal Unemployment taxes, FUTA, only.
