How to Convert Videos to iTunes Format to Play on an Apple iPod

While iTunes can play a wide variety of video formats, including MP4, M4V and MOV, some videos might have to be converted to be playable on iPods. If you have tried to copy a video to an iPod and received an error, it's most likely because the iPod cannot play the video. Fortunately, iTunes has a built-in option to convert videos for iPod or iPhone use with ease.

      Video Info Showing File Extension

Determine the file type of the videos you want to convert to iPod format. Check the file's extension (the letters after the "." in the file name, such as .avi, .mov, etc.). If you choose "Get Info" in iTunes while highlighting the file in question, you can view the file's path (location) and extension.

    • 2

Try copying the file directly to any connected iPod if it is an MOV, M4V or MP4 file. These files are fairly compatible and may not need to be converted at all for use in iPod. If you get an error and cannot copy the file, proceed to the next step.

    • 3

Highlight the file(s) you want to convert. Right-click on them (PC) or control-click (Mac) and select "Create iPod or iPhone Version." Allow a few minutes for the conversion process to complete for short videos. For longer videos, the process could take quite a while.

    • 4

Copy the converted files to your iPod. They should now be fully playable on any iPod capable of video playback.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some file formats such as .avi might need further conversion. You will need software such as QuickTime Pro to convert them to an iTunes-readable format before proceeding to convert them again for iPod use.

  • Converting videos for iPod use will create copies of them, thus taking up space. Monitor your computer's hard drive and delete unneeded files if you're running out of space.
