Things You'll Need:
- Selsun Blue Antifungal creams and lotions
-
Step 1
Wash your skin with a shampoo containing selenium sulfide, like Selsun Blue, which you can purchase at your local drug or grocery store. In the shower, lather the affected areas with the shampoo, massage the skin with your fingers for one minute, then rinse thoroughly with warm water. Dry skin completely.
-
Step 2
Apply an antifungal cream, like Lotrimin AF, to your skin. You can purchase antifungal cream at the drug or grocery store. After showering, rub a thin layer of Lotrimin AF on the afflicted areas. Continue rubbing with your fingers until the cream absorbs into the skin. Use this method twice a day.
-
Step 3
See your dermatologist. If your tinea versicolor is not cured by over-the-counter remedies, your doctor can give you a prescription for a cream or lotion for your condition. Depending on your doctor's instructions, fill the prescription at the drugstore and begin use as soon as possible.
-
Step 4
Apply a prescription cream, like Loprox. Loprox cream is available by prescription only, and is one of the few options your doctor may give you to cure your tinea versicolor. Rub a thin film of lotion on the afflicted area up to three times a day, as indicated by your doctor. Continue using the cream until you have finished the prescription, even if symptoms have gone away before then.
-
Step 5
Take oral antifungal medication. If your tinea versicolor is severe or persistent, your doctor may prescribe an oral antifungal medication, like Diflucan tablets. You will take the medication between one and three times a day, depending on the severity of your condition. Continue taking the entire bottle of medication, even if the symptoms of tinea versicolor have subsided.
