How to Change a Windshield Wiper Arm

Windshield wiper arms are not immune to damage. Although it takes a lot to break a windshield wiper arm, they do break, and will need to be replaced. Instead of taking your vehicle to a repair shop, you can replace a broken windshield wiper arm on your own.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the snap on cover on the bottom of the windshield wiper arm. This cover will pop off with the aid of the screwdriver. All you have to do is find a point near the joint where there is a hole small enough for your screwdriver, or at least a corner of the screwdriver; it won't take much to pop off this cover. Once the cover is off, a small bolt will be visible.

    • 2

Remove the visible bolt using the proper socket size, which varies depending on the make and model of the vehicle. Remember 'lefty loosy, righty tighty' when you are working with screws, nuts and bolts.

    • 3

Pull of the wiper arm from the joint. You may need to use the screwdriver to help you pry it off.

    • 4

Place the new windshield wiper arm on the joint. You will need to put a little pressure down as you are pushing, so that it will fit onto the joint properly. You should also make sure that you are installing the new wiper arm in the same position that the old one was in. There are teeth, or grooves inside the wiper arm that fit to the teeth or groves on the joint, and these much match. This helps make sure that the arm is properly aligned, so you don't have to go back and start all over.

Replace the bolt that you removed in Step 2. Make sure it is tight, but not so tight that you strip the top of the bolt.

    • 6

Replace the cover that was removed in Step 1. This cover should simply snap right back into place.

    • 7

Turn on your windshield wipers to make sure that you installed the arms correctly.
