How to Change Windshield Wipers on a Suburban

Maintenance on your vehicle can be exhausting. There are fluid changes, tire changes and air checks, and checks for leaking or damaged hoses on the motor. Most people do not think about changing their windshield wipers until they start to fall apart, or don't seem to work right anymore. This can be partly attributed to a simple slip of the mind, but it can also be explained by procrastination. When you have an SUV like a Suburban, you tend to put off the things that are harder to get to. Windshield wipers are high, and can require you to use a step stool to get to them properly. It is important that you change your windshield wipers frequently, because faulty blades can actually be dangerous when they cause your windshield to be blurry from the rain or fog.

Instructions

    • 1

Pull the wiper blade arm so that the wiper comes away from the windshield. There should be a point where the arm will lock into place (until you push it back down).

    • 2

Locate the release slot that holds the blade in place on the arm. This release slot is located in the middle of the blade, where it pops onto the arm.

    • 3

Insert the small screwdriver into the slot, and either pry up or press in on the tab. At the same time, gently pull up on the blade until it pops off. You will have to tug a bit harder so that the blade will pop over the connecting ball.

    • 4

Open the packaging for the new blade, being careful not to catch the rubber part on the plastic. You should also not hold hold blade by this part, or the rubber will tear.

    • 5

Line up the connecting hole of the blade with the arm, and press down so that it pops on. Make sure that the blade is passing the connecting ball on the arm. The release slot tab will automatically catch, preventing the blade from popping back off.

    • 6

Push the wiper arm carefully back into position, so that the blade is on the windshield. Repeat the steps above for the other windshield wiper.
