Cook Steak Using Gas

Cooking with a gas grill is a great alternative to using a charcoal grill. The ignition is simple, the grill heats more quickly and the temperature is easier to control, which makes for more even grilling. You can cook practically anything on a gas grill--chicken, beef, fish and even vegetables and fruit. Cooking a steak with clean-burning gas means that the flavor of the steak, instead of the flavor of charcoal, is the star of the show.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Propane Grill Propane Tank Lighter or matches (if needed) Steak Tongs
  1. Step 1

Check the gauge of your propane tank to make sure you have enough gas to cook your food.

  2. Step 2

Test the tank valve to be sure it is closed before attaching it to the grill. Check that all burner valves are turned off.

  3. Step 3

Follow the instructions for your grill to attach the regulator to the tank valve. The instructions may be different for different models, but most call for screwing them together by hand. Using a wrench or other tool could damage the regulator, which may cause a gas leak.

  4. Step 4

Follow the instructions for your grill to light it. For some models, you will simply use the start knob or button. Other models require lighting the gas with a match or lighter.

  5. Step 5

Preheat the grill by turning the burners to high and closing the lid. Leave the grill closed for 10 minutes.

  6. Step 6

Check to make sure the grill temperature is 500 degrees.

  7. Step 7

Turn the burner(s) you are going to use to a low setting and the others, to medium.

  8. Step 8

Place the steaks on the lower-heat burners. Close the lid. This method cooks the meat indirectly as the heat from the medium-heat burners cooks the steak from a distance. This will sear in the juices.

  9. Step 9

Sear the steak for about 4 minutes on one side.

  10. Step 10

Keep the grill lid closed at all times, except for the second or two it takes to turn the steak.

  11. Step 11

Use tongs to turn the steak. If you use a fork, the perforations will allow juice to leak out.

  12. Step 12

Sear the steak on the other side for 2 to 3 minutes for rare; 4 to 5 minutes for medium rare; 6 to 7 minutes for well done.

  13. Step 13

Let the steak sit on a plate for a minute or two before serving.

Tips & Warnings
  • To check for a leak, put a soap-and-water solution to the valve connection. Open the tank valve, turning it counterclockwise. If there are bubbles on the connections, you have a leak. Turn off the gas and contact the propane tank manufacturer's service center.
