How to Connect to a Secure FTP

SFTP stands for Secure File Transfer Protocol. By using SFTP, file transfer will be more secure, thus protecting information that is of vital importance during transfer on the Internet.

Things You'll Need:

  • Web Host FTP Client
  1. Step 1

    Download and install an SFTP Client for your operating platform.

  2. Step 2

    Open the SFTP Client of choice and create a new site.

  3. Step 3

    Find out which port number is needed from the Web host, and enter the correct port number.

  4. Step 4

    Select server type as SFTP-SSH File Transfer Protocol.

  5. Step 5

    Now enter a log-in name and password, and any other information that may be needed.

Tips & Warnings
  • To configure the SFTP to one's own specifications, simply select the choices in the preferences section of the selected client.
  • Be sure to use a password that is easy to remember to avoid locking one's self out.
