The Today Sponge is an over-the-counter birth control device for women, which works by blocking and absorbing sperm. The sponge disappeared from the American market in 1994. It was distributed in limited numbers starting in 2005, and in early 2009 was re-launched nationwide.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Today Vaginal Contraceptive Sponge

    Insertion

  1. Step 1

Remove the sponge from its wrapper.

  2. Step 2

Wet the sponge using tap water. This will activate the product's spermicide.

  3. Step 3

Squeeze the wet sponge in your hand several times, until it becomes sudsy.

  4. Step 4

Fold the sponge in half, with the string loop hanging underneath. The fold should be in line with the string, so that the string runs from one end of the fold to the other.

  5. Step 5

Squat down slightly and, using your free hand to spread your vaginal lips, carefully slide the folded sponge, lengthwise, into your vagina. Push the sponge as far as your fingers will allow, while still being able to reach the string. If inserted properly, the sponge should completely cover your cervix.

  6. Removal

  7. Step 1

Wait at least 6 hours after intercourse to remove the sponge.

  8. Step 2

Insert a finger into your vagina and grasp the string. If you cannot locate the string, grasp the sponge itself.

  9. Step 3

Gently pull the string loop until the sponge slides out. If this proves difficult, try tensing and then relaxing your vaginal muscles before pulling, to allow easier passage.

  10. Step 4

After removing the sponge, run a finger along the inside of your vagina to check for any torn pieces of sponge, and remove them if found.

  11. Step 5

Throw away the Today Sponge in a garbage container. The makers of Today Sponge warn against disposing of the sponge by flushing it down the toilet.

Tips & Warnings
  • The Today Sponge is effective for up to 24 hours after insertion. The Today Sponge does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases, and is not guaranteed to prevent pregnancy.
