Things You'll Need:
- Scotch tape
- Tin snips
- Metal file
-
Step 1
"Fluff" the tree. If your tree has just come out of the package or out of storage, be sure to fluff the branches to make sure they're in the proper configuration: all branches pointing straight out and perpendicular to the core, rather than bent up against the truck or out at odd angles.
-
Step 2
Fold the ends of the branches of the tree at the points you want to trim them. Do this with every branch you want to trim before cutting anything. This will allow you to get an idea of what the tree will look like once you've completed the trimming and make sure that you''ll be cutting the branches to the lengths you want.
-
Step 3
Pull back the artificial needles around each point you're going to cut. On either side of the spot on the wire where you plan to cut, gather the needles away to either side, then secure them in place with some clear tape. This will keep you from trimming the greenery along with the wire and prevent any stubby, too-short needles while insuring that the trimmed wire end remains covered.
-
Step 4
Snip the branches. Trim the wire with the wire snips and do your best to avoid trimming any needles.
-
Step 5
File the tips of the wire where you've cut them using the metal file. This will keep the wires from having sharp edges that may get on the clothing of passersby or any cloth parts of ornaments.
