How to Remove Head Lice
Head lice are parasitic bugs. They live on the human scalp because they feed on human blood. Lice infestations are not caused by unsanitary conditions. They do not cause disease, but they can be very irritating. Head lice can damage your hair and should therefore be removed as quickly and efficiently as possible.

- Over-the-counter or prescription lice treatment
- Fine-toothed comb
- Laundry detergent
- Vacuum cleaner
- Replacement vacuum bag

Contact your doctor or pharmacist to confirm the problem is head lice.

Purchase the appropriate pediculicide (insecticide lice treatment) by filling your doctor's prescription or following your pharmacist's suggestion. Carefully follow the product directions and heed all label warnings. Remember this product is a pesticide and used incorrectly can be dangerous. This product should kill the lice.

Comb through and pick out any remaining nits using a fine-toothed comb. Nits are lice eggs which look like tiny particles of white sand . To prevent reinfestation, repeat this process daily for up to a week.

Wash all possibly contaminated linens and clothing in hot water using your regular laundry detergent. Dry any items that can't be washed for at least 20 minutes on high heat.

Wash all hats, scarves, and other headwear in hot water and mild detergent to prevent damage. Discard any headwear that cannot be washed.

Vacuum all floors and furniture thoroughly. Be sure to vacuum in the cracks and crevices. Empty the canister or change the bag in your vacuum afterward.
