Although having the biggest television money can buy might seem appealing, it is not always practical. This is especially true if you have to fit a TV to a cabinet. If it does not fit in the cabinet, then you are in a bit of a bind. The key is getting the largest TV for the area you have.

Step 1

Measure the perimeter of the area your TV will sit in. This is the measurement from one side of the cabinet to the other, and the measurement from the top to the bottom of the inner space. Record this information on a piece of paper.

Step 2

Measure the depth of the area where your TV will sit. This is the measurement from the front of the cabinet to the back. If there is no back to your cabinet, still measure how much space you have available to the nearest wall. If you are getting a CRT (cathode-ray tube) television, this is especially important since you will have to greatly consider the depth of the TV. If you are getting a flat-screen TV, this is not as important. Record the depth on the piece of paper.

Step 3

Consider if you want any decorative items sitting in the cabinet with the TV. If this is the case, subtract a couple of inches from the depth so that you can have room to set these items.

Step 4

Review your recorded measurements and subtract half an inch to an inch from the available top-to-bottom space. Although this reduces the size of your television slightly, it will accommodate most decorative frames or stands for the TV.

Step 5

Purchase your TV, bearing in mind the measurements you have recorded. When investing in a TV, note it's largest external measurement, factoring in the frame of the TV as well as any included stands. To get maximum screen size, choose a television with a smaller frame surrounding the actual display.
