How to Design a TV Stand
Design a stand for your television based on the size of your TV, the type of storage space you need and the dimensions of the viewing wall. You can add glass doors, drawers and open shelving to hold electronics and other peripherals. Tailor your TV stand to the available space and your personal requirements. Design the finish for your stand to coordinate with the other furniture in the room.

Measure the available wall space where you will place your TV to determine the maximum width and depth of your stand. The width will determine how wide you can make your TV stand, and the distance to the walkway space or the nearest piece of furniture will determine the amount of clearance you need in front or to the sides of the stand. The amount of clearance dictates the maximum depth of your TV stand. You should also consider any door openings that may inhibit the size of your stand. For example, if your viewing wall is adjacent to a door that opens against it, the width and depth of your TV stand may be affected.

Measure the depth and width of your TV to confirm that it will fit within your maximum width and depth dimensions. If you have a flat screen, measure the width of the TV and the depth of the stand that holds it in place. Design your TV stand so that the width is close to the width of your TV. Visually, this creates a unified piece and your eye will read it as one element. Decide how high you want to sit your TV; this will be the height of your stand.

Design openings for peripherals like a DVR or stereo system. Measure the dimensions of your speakers and incorporate a space for them in your TV stand design. If your wall space is wide enough, design closed storage for movies, music and gaming systems. Add drawers to your stand for remotes and additional closed storage. Combining drawers, doors and open storage is functional and adds to the design interest of your stand.
