Plan a Driving Route

Planning a driving route takes serious consideration. Though unexpected conditions may arise, you can help eliminate most of the irritation of driving in unknown territory by being well prepared for the adventure. Learning how to plan a driving route will benefit your car and your sanity.

Instructions

    • 1

Input your starting point and destination into an online map (see Resources). Many programs will give you the shortest and fastest driving routes, depending on how you wish to travel.

    • 2

Check the local weather for the areas you will be driving through. This can easily be done online (see Resources). Consider changing your route if you are likely to be caught in heavy rain or wind or other hazardous conditions.

    • 3

Find out about any road construction in the areas where you will be traveling. This can severely delay your travels if you are not aware of it beforehand, and you could get lost if you are forced to take a detour. Information about road work often is available on the news websites for specific cities.

    • 4

Consider any stops you would like to make along the way. If you are driving through a city with a popular attraction you would like to see, figure that into your driving route. Include how to get off the major highway and to the location and back so you will be prepared for the detour. Include how many stops you will need to make for gas and food as well.

    • 5

Book hotels in advance if you plan to stop overnight along the way to your destination. This will avoid having to drive around a town to find vacancies, which can get you lost if the city is unfamiliar.

    • 6

Allow time for unexpected situations, such as bathroom stops and traffic. Leave early enough to give yourself an extra hour of driving time. In most cases, it's better to be early than late.

Tips & Warnings

  • Take a map along with you. Unforeseen circumstances could arise, and you need to be prepared to change your route if needed. Pack snacks and drinks to cut down the costs and time needed to stop at convenience stores.

  • Do not allow your fuel gauge to be on E for too long. You do not want to be stranded on your driving route.
