How to Remove Hiberfil.Sys from XP

The hiberfil.sys file is found on most Windows XP computers. The file is often very large, with some users reporting it to be more than a gigabyte. The hiberfil.sys file is the save file for the Hibernation feature in XP. As distinct from the Standby option, Hibernation saves a copy of all the processes running on the computer while shutting down most of the hardware. You can turn off this feature and remove the hiberfil.sys file from your computer if it is taking up too much hard drive space.

      Click the "Start" button and choose "Control Panel."

      Select the "Hibernate" tab.

      Remove the mark next to "Enable Hibernate Support." Click "Apply" and "OK."

      Restart your computer to complete the deletion of the Hiberfil.sys file.
