It is the time of year that teachers around the world begin looking for vacation bible school lessons. Some churches operate as a teams and have a cohesive theme. However, for teachers who are going solo on their VBS (Vacation Bible School) plans, it can be a slight challenge. There are materials that help kids learn about Christ AND are lots of fun! All one needs is a little creativity, access to the Internet, and some time.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

    VBS Lesson Plans

In the past, I have found places online that will mail free vacation bible school lessons. Type these or similar words into Google: “Free Christian Resources”, “Christian Freebies”, and “Free VBS lesson plans” to narrow your search results to more sites that offer no-cost materials.

  2. Step 2

    Be Creative

If you are helping with VBS crafts, this can be a great way to share God’s message in a creative way. There are places (such as Hobby Lobby or online) stores that sell vacation bible school craft supplies. My favorite way to save money in this area is by buying in bulk. For example, look in the beads section for ways to make simple summer bracelets. Make it an easy craft so that those of many ages and learning levels can do the craft with little to no frustrations. Perhaps you may want buy beads with letters in order to spell out WWJD, Jesus, etc. Opt for such crafts that can be for either gender. Boys/girls alike are happy making bracelets with beads that slide onto a piece of leather strand.

  3. Step 3

Christian Freebies to Help you Share the Word

There are also websites that offer free Christian trinkets, Bibles, etc. My best advice is to search the sites a month or two prior to the beginning of your VBS. I like to use these as a back-up method, but do not depend on them. These small Christian freebies can provide you with little extras to use as small gifts at church. As a teacher you may give these trinkets to all that attempt to learn extra bible verses as an incentive to learn more about God. These trinkets are great when used in addition to your vacation bible school lessons. Many sites will follow through with your requests for materials, and many will not. As Forrest Gump says, “Life is like a box of chocolates.... you never know what you are going to get.” Keep this quote in mind for what you may or may not receive in your mailbox.

  4. Step 4

    Songs

This is another excellent learning tool for kids at VBS. Most children learn best when songs are incorporated into a lesson. Sing songs that you have recently found on a website or basic classics (maybe “Jesus Loves Me” for younger children). I recall one VBS teacher that was dedicated enough to create her own song to help the kids learn all of the books of the bible in order. It was cute and it worked!
