Step 1
Give your dryer the summer off and commit to using your clothesline whenever the weather permits. This will lower your utility costs, lengthen the lifespan of your dryer, and give you a good workout during the summer months as well.
-
Step 2
Pick your drying times wisely. Breezy days are the best for quick drying and humid days take the longest for your laundry to get fully dry. Also, don’t hang your clothes out too late in the evening because clothesline drying becomes much slower at night as the temperature rapidly cools. Keep a watchful eye on the weather because while breezy days are the best for drying, if it is just blowing in a rain storm you won’t be able to achieve your ultimate goal in the end.
-
Step 3
Hang cotton t-shirts upside down by their bottom hem on your clothesline. This will leave the fewest amount of marks on the shirts. With nicer knit shirts, however, hang them by the armpit and drape the extra fabric over the clothesline. If you hang these shirts by their bottom hem, they will stretch out and lose their shape.
-
Step 4
If don’t have enough space or clothespins, double up with your bath and dish towels. Clothespin marks don’t matter with these items so you don’t have to be as careful about clothespin placement, and it does indeed save a great deal of space on your clothesline for other items.
-
Step 5
For heavier pieces such as blankets and bed spreads, try to hang them over two lines on the clothesline. This will prevent them from dragging on the ground and dirtying their edges. It also provides more space in the middle to increase air circulation and help the items dry faster.
