How to Landscape with Colorful Succulents

All cactus plants are succulents, but not all succulents are cacti. Succulents are simply plants that have adapted stems or leaves to hold water. Many have evolved into decorative, sculptural shapes that can turn your garden into an art gallery. Some have colorful leaves, stems and many show off vibrant flowers. Here is some information on how to landscape with colorful succulents.

   Big succulents and cacti make great focal points. Agaves, tree aloes, and yuccas are some tall growing succulents that create height and bloom with showy flowers collected on spikes.

   Small succulents are great for ground covers. Many Echeverias, Sedums, Kalanchoes, Crassulas and more have wonderfully colorful leaves as well as showy flowers, some brilliant with color.

   You can grow wonderful container gardens with succulents. Set the unusual colored and textured plants into ornamental pots, large or small, and landscape with colorful succulents in small areas like patios or balconies.

   Use succulents mixed with other plants in the garden, or create succulent gardens. Most look great mixed with rock. And succulent gardens are fire resistant. They will add color when they bloom and create interesting shapes and textures to complement other plants in the landscape. Use these plants to edge a border or fill a space where other plants won't grow.
