Go on a Pirate Field Trip With Your Class

Each year, towards the end of the year, I teach a "Pirate" thematic unit in my Kindergarten classroom. The kids absolutely love it. There is so much pirate material out there that it will not be hard for you to fill up a thematic unit. Here is how I end the thematic unit and the year. This field trip requires a lot of coordination and a really fun dad to play the part of the pirate. This is a day that my kids never, ever forget! Yours won't either.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Have the kids find the pirate maps early in the week.

  2. Step 2

Buy some "eye black" from a a sporting goods store to paint the kids' pirate beards on. This is the stuff that baseball players wear under their eyes when they play.

  3. Step 3

Give the kids pirate beards and scars. Also, order pirate bandanas online from a company such as Oriental Trading (see Resources below).

  4. Step 4

Find a dad who can play the pirate and you chase/follow him to the treasure. We do our treasure hunt at the beach, but you can easily do it at a park or even on your campus.

  5. Step 5

Create maps for the kids to follow.

  6. Step 6

Have each child dig in a designated spot and find his/her own treasure! I fill each box with stuff from the 99 Cents store. Every box is identical.
