When you think about the letter "A" in the English language, you probably think "oh that is just the first letter of the English alphabet". However the letter signifies much more than just the first letter of the English alphabet. This article will show you the importance of the letter "A" in the English alphabet.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Read the following steps so that you can understand the importance of the letter "A" in the English language. There are also a few key trivia type answers that you will receive from this article that perhaps not all your friends know.

  2. Step 2

Besides the obvious of being the first letter in the English alphabet song, the letter "A" is also known as a vowel. Vowels are really important in the English language because they are the letters that bring words together more naturally. Almost every word in the English language has a vowel if not more than one. Without vowels the English language would be very difficult to pronounce.

  3. Step 3

The letter "A" also is known as an indefinite article. What this means is that it defines a noun or something before that thing is announced. Almost like the fanfare before the president or queen steps out of their limo. "A" is the fanfare of a noun. There is a rule to using the letter "A" as a fanfare though. The rule is that you may use "A" before a noun as long as the noun begins with a consonant. If the noun begins with a vowel then you must add the letter "N" after the "A" to make the word "An". For example " He threw an apple at me". The word "an" was used before apple because apple begins with a vowel.

  4. Step 4

The letter "A" also has more meanings to the English language. In college when the professor is talking at 1000 words a minute, sometimes it is hard to take notes. Some people have learned how to write in shorthand because it is a faster way to write long lectures by using symbols and abbreviations that represent words that they can later decipher. "A" in shorthand could represent words like: about, answer, alto, also, adjective, action, or any other word that begins with the letter "A". You can also put two "A" s together to make "AA" which is often used to represent Alcoholics Anonymous or Associates in Arts

  5. Step 5

The letter "A" also has another part-time job as a prefix. The "A" is used at the beginning of a verb to make the verb happen in the present. Instead of sleep, you can say "Bob is asleep". The "A" helps the sentence not sound so bland too, "Bob is sleep" (Not grammatically correct). The "A" helps the English language by using prefix' s on verbs so that the sentences do not sound so choppy.

  6. Step 6

The literacy rate in the United States is falling. Many people do not read books anymore. Everyone is relying on television for their stories. They are missing out on the rich details that books offer. To understand the English language more, and to understand the importance of the letter "A", it is best to keep reading books. I hope this article helped in some way or another.
