This article will tell you how to select the correct ceiling fan, install, and wire the electric.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Basic tools philips screwdriver, wire strippers, and an electrical tester.
  1. Step 1

To select the proper fan for your home you must consider the ceiling height.Tall ceilings will require a long mounting rod .Low ceilings may require a flush mount or short rod. Some fans can be used for either. Also consider options such as remote control ,wall mounted speed control,or pull chains.

  2. Step 2

If you have a junction box in the ceiling where you want to mount the fan go to step 3.If not you need to read my article on "how to install a junction box for a fan.

  3. Step 3

In your ceiling box there will be three wires that you need. The bare copper or green wire is the ground. Now you need to figure out which is your hot wire(usually a black ,red or blue.If you have a no contact tester it will light up only on the hot wire.Dont forget the wall switch needs to be in the on position. The last wire should be the neutral usually a white wire.Once youve established your wires TURN OFF THE POWER At the breaker and TEST before continuing.

  4. Step 4

Now you can follow the fan instructions for assembly. When you get to the wiring splice the grounds from your ceiling box to the fan ground.Next splice the neutrals(White). If their is multiple white wires in your ceiling box already spliced be careful not to separate them to avoid getting shocked. If your fan has a light kit you will splice the lights(blue on most fans)and fan motor(black on most fans)to the hot in your ceiling box.If you have two switches on the wall one can control fan and the other the lights. When fan is complete turn the breaker on and test lights and fan.
