How to Get Your Kids to Keep Up with Home Rules
Establishing house rules is a parenting tip that you want to take to heart. Without an understanding between you and your kids about what the rules of the house are, your household can easily slip into chaos.

Figure out what your rules are and keep them simple. Somewhere between 5 to 15 rules should be plenty. If you have too many, then you'll seem like a tyrant. Keeping your rules somewhat generic will keep you from having to make your list too long. For example, here are 3 general, house rule ideas that don't get too specific:
1. All chores must be completed before playing can begin
2. No running or screaming in the house
3. Wash your hands before eating -
2
Be clear about consequences. A house rule means nothing if there is no consequence for breaking it. This could be losing privileges. (You can let them gain privileges back for good behavior.) Remember that kids are going to break the rules along the way, so make sure your punishments and rewards are appropriate and not too severe.

Keep track of your kids. This might be the hard part if you have more than one child and/or they are older and have more freedom. Do your best to ask them what they are up to periodically. Ask them if they've completed their chores and make sure you check that they did!

Put on an objective face when they break a rule. This one is also challenging, but it will keep tempers in check if you are a role model of calm - even when a rule has been broken. Explain to them how they broke the rule and remind them of the consequence.

5
Listen to their side of the story, but don't let them interrupt you do to so. Fostering respect in your home is such an important key to a happy house. Your children will be much more likely to follow the rules if they know that their efforts are appreciated and that you respect them, not just them respecting you.

6
Reevaluate the rules. As your kids grow older, remember to reset the rules. Be clear about changes and make sure that each child knows which rules apply to them. When everyone knows what their roles are, then you won't have to hear as many complaints about what their siblings can do and they can't do.
