How to Calculate My Life Path Number

A Life Path Number is a concept in numerology and astrology that the sum of your birth date provides an insight into your personality, strengths and weaknesses. People who ascribe to the validity of life path numbers cite examples of famous personalities such as Alexander the Great, Abraham Lincoln and Adolph Hitler to show that their numbers accurately portray the kinds of person they were known to be.

  1. The Calculation

    • 1

Take the number of the month in which you were born. If you were born in a two digit month (October to December) then add those two digits. For example, December would be 12, which is one + two.

    • 2

Add the day (do not add the individual digits of the day) and the entire year together. To clarify, if you were born in 1972, you must add 1,972 to this number. Do not add just 72 and do not add the individual digits together (i.e. 1+9+7+2). With this total, you will arrive at a four-digit number. Reduce this to a single digit by adding the individual digits.

    • 3

For example if you were born on October 14, 1972, then you would add 1+0 (month) to 1+4 (day) to 1,972 (year). You would have 1+0+1+4+1,972 which equals 1,978. Now add 1+9+7+8 to arrive at 25. Since we want to end with a single digit number, continue to add 2+5 to arrive at 7, which would be your life path number.

    • 4

Do not reduce master numbers. Some astrologists, fortune-tellers and numerologists identify 11, 22, and 33 as "master numbers" that should not be reduced. Those would be your life path numbers if arrived at. Having a master number would mean that you are "twice" or "double" the power of the single digit. For example, the number two is described by some numerologists as having the quality of being a good listener, being a fixer, a mediator and peacemaker. There is a strength in integrating people to work as a team, but on the negative side, twos can be a person with nervous energy and an extremist or zealot. If your life path number is 22, then you would have these traits very strongly.

    • 5

Take Bill Gates as an example. He was born October 28, 1955. His number would therefore be 10+28+1,955 or 1993. Continuing the process yields 1+9+9+3 or 22. This shows that Bill Gates is an extreme example of a "2" personality.
