Instructions

    • 1

Cut a piece of 2-inch foam 30 inches by 30 inches with an electric knife. You can use a utility knife, but the job is much faster and easier with an electric knife.

    • 2

Cut a 64-inch-by-31-inch piece of batting. The batting is cut larger than the foam to cover all sides of the foam. Lay the batting on a flat surface and spray the entire top of one side of the batting with adhesive. Place the 2-inch foam on top and wrap the batting around it. Trim away any excess batting.

    • 3

Cut a 66-inch-by-34-inch section of upholstery fabric to make the cushion cover. The extra length and width of the fabric is to cover the edges and to allow for a 1-inch seam all the way around the cushion. Fold the fabric in half, face to face. Pin the fabric together around the two sides adjacent to the folded edge, 1 inch from the edge. Sew a seam along the pinned edges, removing the pins as you go.

    • 4

Fold each edge of the open side of your fabric back 1 inch and pin them separately. Iron the seams flat. This opening is where you will insert the foam and where you will place your Velcro strips. Iron the seams open on the two sides you stitched in Step 3, so the edges of your floor cushion are smooth.

    • 5

Stitch a seam along each of the two edges you pinned in Step 4, removing the pins as you go. Attach a strip of self-adhesive Velcro along the length of each of those two edges.

    • 6

Turn the cushion cover inside out. Insert the foam into the cushion cover and seal the Velcro edges.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can find foam, batting, upholstery fabric and everything else you need for this project at your local fabric store. Upholstery fabric is sturdier than other fabrics and will hold up better for a floor cushion.

  • Spray adhesive in a ventilated space.
