How to Apply for Canadian Immigration

Canada holds plenty of allure as a place to live; it has vast countryside, public health care, low crime rates, spotless and modern major cities, and an overall high quality of life. However, the Canadian government carefully protects its citizenship status, and becoming a citizen can be a difficult and lengthy process. It can also be difficult to become a permanent resident, which is a prerequisite for citizenship.

Instructions

  1. Applying for Permanent Citizenship

    • 1

Choose a resident status. Anyone applying for Canadian permanent resident status must place themselves in one of the following categories: skilled workers and professionals; Quebec-selected skilled workers; Canadian Experience Class; investors, entrepreneurs and self-employed people; or Provincial nominees (one of the country's provinces or territories nominates a person to move and work there).
People who wish to join family members who are already Canadian citizens can have those family members sponsor their application for citizenship.
See Resources for the Citizenship and Immigration Canada website with detailed information on each classification as well all required forms.

    • 2

Download the application package. Each category has its own application forms. The application package also includes instructions on how to calculate your application fee.

    • 3

Fill out the forms. Most forms can be completed on the computer, but they may be completed by hand if you wish. Complete and sign the forms. Once you have completed the forms, print them. They cannot be saved on your computer.

    • 4

Enclose your processing fee (this can be returned if your application is denied) and your supporting documents (if required).

    • 5

Mail the application. The address varies depending on your category.

Tips & Warnings

  • You may wish to use a lawyer or other representative to assist you in completing your application and petitioning for permanent resident status. The application review process takes time; it requires a medical background check and criminal background check, for example.
