How to Report Mortgage Fraud

There are thousands of mortgage lenders in the United States. While the majority of these lenders and banking institutions are federally bonded and completely legitimate, there are some cases of fraudulent mortgage dealings.

      Determine the type of injustice you've suffered. There are various forms of mortgage fraud including predatory lending, identity theft, falsification of documents, and many others. You should determine the type of infraction you believe you have suffered from in order to decide which law enforcement agency you should best report it to.

      Contact the FBI if you've experience outright fraud. Examples of outright fraud usually involve several parties working in concert to steal money or property or falsely assign debt to an unwitting borrower. The FBI Mortgage Fraud Task Force has experts capable of carrying out investigations on credible tips and accusations.

      Contact your state attorney general's office if feel you have been a victim of predatory lending. The National Association of Attorneys General has contact information for all 50 states -- you can find a link in the References section. Predatory lending practices include aggressive phone harassment; "bait and switch" techniques (offering one thing and actually delivering on another); and generally forcing a customer into an agreement to which he or she has not completely agreed.

      Contact your state's real estate or appraisal licensing board if you have been a victim of appraisal fraud. See the link in the References section for more information. Fraud committed in these categories can include appraisal falsification; illegal broker fees; fraudulent comparable properties used in an appraisal report; and conspiracy between appraisers and/or real estate agents and lenders to defraud consumers, or between customers are real estate professionals to defraud lenders.
