How to Remove Pepper Oil

      Cut the pepper completely the first time. Put it in a bowl or into the dish you're making, so you don't have to touch it again.

      Fill a sink with ice water and soak your hands for 10 minutes. Then, put your hands under hot running water. Dunk your hands back in the ice water, remove and pat your hands until just damp. Let them air dry and then dust them with baby powder. This process gives your hands a deep clean and provides some protection with the layer of powder.

      Pour a few tablespoons of lemon juice in a bowl of water, and soak your hands for several minutes, if the ice water method is inconvenient. Alternatively, soak your hands in rubbing alcohol.

      Wait a few hours if none of these methods work, and the pepper oil will come off on its own. Use this method only if the pepper oil doesn't affect you too much, and you don't mind leaving a slight trace of pepper oil with whatever you touch. This spicy trace on the fingers will leave after six or seven hours.

Tips & Warnings

  • Avoid having to worry about pepper oil by using rubber gloves when you cut peppers. Because the oil is only on the seeds and membranes, you don't need to use gloves to handle uncut peppers.

  • If you wear contact lenses, wear rubber gloves when cutting peppers.
